Africa In The Dark

After two flights of 8+ hours, we stumbled half delerious out of the plane and down the steep stairway onto the tarmac under a dark African sky. The air was warm and you can immediately sense that you are somewhere different.

We were warmly greeted by some Lutheran friends who drove all the way out to the airport to welcome us and then we were on the road to our hotel. The lack of light is striking as you depart from an international airport. People are walking along the roadside in the darkness. The smell of burning campfires fills the air.

Along the way I could see the faint outline of the glacier capped Mt. Kilimanjaro through the darkness. The first timers were not able to see it. I think it is difficult to get yourself to believe how high up in the sky you need to look to see Uluru peak!

It took about 45 minutes to arrive at AMEG Lodge which seems like a lovely place.  We look forward to checking it all out in the morning after a good nights sleep. For now, we are grateful to be here and excited for the adventure to begin!
